Sandy Hook Lighthouse, Sandy Hook, New Jersey--(New York Lighthouse)--1764 the oldest Lighthouse in America, it was built of rubble-stone under the guidance of Isaac Conro , a mason and builder from New York City. It was lit June 11 1964-- Octagonal figure, having 8 equal sides; the diameter at the base is 29 feet and at the top of the wall 15 feet, the Lantern is 7 feet high; the circumference 33 feet, the whole lantern is iron and the top covered with copper. The lighthouse is 9 stories tall, total of 103 feet.The purpose of the Lighthouse was to guide ships into New York Harbor Money to build the Lighthouse came from lotteries. Jonias Smith was authorized to collect 3 pence a ton from ships passing the lighthouse and entering the harbor This money was used to pay the keeper and buy supplies for the lighthouse It was susceptible to lightning strikes for it was the only building of any height for miles.June 1766 Lighting hit the lighthouse and building and caused some damaged and hurt some people. Early in the Revolutionary war it was ordered to take the glass out of the lighthouse and save it if possible this was to protect the light from from the war.. A daring attack was led by Benjamin Tupper to destroy the lighthouse with cannon fire, but after an hour of volley he found the so firm that the cannon fire made no impression. the lighthouse remained under British control for most of the war. 1856 a third order Fersnel lens was installed. In1857 the lighthouse was refurbished , red brick lining was installed to reinforce the rubble-stone walls, and the spiral iron staircase replaced the wooden on. 1890's the peaceful setting at the Lighthouse was changed. Fort Hancock was created near the lighthouse and massive concrete gun batteries were placed to defend the harbor on New York and later Nike missiles were deployed nearby. The ownership of the Lighthouse was transferred to the national Park Service in 1996 and still remains in good condition. The view here is really great.
