Beavertail Lighthouse, Rhode Island --This is the nations 4Th oldest lighthouse the original lighthouse was built in 1749 and the foundation still remains visible. It was a 58 foot wooden lighthouse the first keeper was Able Franklin. The tower burned down in 1753 it was rebuilt and then it was burned down by the British in 1779. It was rebuilt. This Lighthouse also had a Woman keeper-Demaris H. Weeden who took over for her husband Robert who died 1848 she remained keeper for 9 years. 1850 a report showed that Beavertail Lighthouse was the worst built tower. A New tower was built in1856, 45 foot square cylindrical granite(stone) tower with lantern and double gallery ,attached to a 2-story stucco-clad brick keeper's house, lantern and watch room is painted black; keepers house is white with red roofs The lighthouse was electrified in 1931 while George T. Mander was keeper.
The hurricane of September 21, 1938 damaged most of the buildings at Beavertail. Carl Chellis was keeper and survived the storm but his daughter was killed on the school bus that was toppled on her way home school. The Lighthouse was automated in 1972. Beavertail Lighthouse is located within Beavertail State Park which is easily accessible by car. Light remains active to help navigation and is maintained by the Coast Guard. The assistant keeper's house (built in 1898) has been converted into the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum
